The Kankakee River Metropolitan Wastewater Treatment Facility is located on 89 acres of land adjacent to the Kankakee River. The original treatment facility was built in 1936 with major expansions in 1960, 1968 and 1988. Through an intergovernmental agreement in 1988, the City of Kankakee, the Villages of Aroma Park, Bourbonnais and Bradley agreed to provide for joint and cooperative operation, use and maintenance of the wastewater treatment system.
In 1996, the Kankakee River Metropolitan Agency (KRMA) was formed. KRMA owns and manages the facility in the beginning of 2005 and was completed by the fall of 2006. This project includes one chemical and two biological odor control systems as well as major equipment replacement. The Executive Director and fourteen staff members operate and maintain the facility.
