The Kankakee River Metropolitan Wastewater Treatment Facility is located on 89 acres of land adjacent to the Kankakee River. The original treatment facility was built in 1936 with major expansions in 1960, 1968 and 1988. Through an intergovernmental agreement in 1988, the City of Kankakee, the Villages of Aroma Park, Bourbonnais and Bradley agreed to provide for joint and cooperative operation, use and maintenance of the wastewater treatment system.
In 1996, the Kankakee River Metropolitan Agency (KRMA) was formed. KRMA owns and manages the facility in the beginning of 2005 and was completed by the fall of 2006. This project includes one chemical and two biological odor control systems as well as major equipment replacement. The Executive Director and fourteen staff members operate and maintain the facility.
Plant Design/Utilization Data:
30 Day Average Flow Capacity 25 MGD Current Average Flow 14 MGD
Organic loading capacity: 40,000 lbs per day Current loading 20,000lbs per day
Population Equivalent 235,000 Available: 118,000
KRMA has an approved facility planning area which represents approximately two-thirds of the County of Kankakee. This service area includes the City and three Villages along with an area reaching north to the Illinois Diversatech Campus located in the Village of Manteno. Major interceptors serve the existing population and radiate to the north, east, and south of the metropolitan area. With very little additional extension, the KRMA plant is capable of serving the entire County of Kankakee as well as developing areas in eastern Will County.
Discharge Standards/Performance Monthly Average
BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand) 20 mg/l (90+% removal)
SS (Suspended Solids) 25 mg/l (90+% removal)
Estimated to be 75,000 persons within the City and three Villages as well as more than 30 significant industrial dischargers and approximately 700 commercial users.
